PAL & PAL BARSTOOL
--
DESIGN PROCESS
When I was a kid I tried to make my own skateboard in the garage by bending a piece of plywood. The project was a limited success since it turned out too thick and heavy or too thin and flexible. I lacked the concave shape in my decks that enable commercial skateboards to be just 10 mm thick and still tough enough to jump on without breaking. When I was sketching on stool concepts for One Nordic, the idea of using this technique came back to me. By placing the legs on the outside perimeter of the seat, the legs would naturally need to bend in order to follow this shape. This meant that I could work with legs that are wide and really thin compared to the ordinary leg on a chair.
The next challenge came when trying to make the legs detachable to fit in with the One Nordic philosophy. Esthetically the legs are easily made detachable, but for structural strength and stability we needed to develop a special joint together with the development team. We came
up with a great solution that allows the legs to be assembled by the customer without any extra tools.

The Pal bar stool retains all the advantages of the low stool - easy assembly, lightweight sturdiness, affordability - while its extra height makes it perfect for bars and restaurants as well as kitchen counters. Designed by Hallgeir Homstvedt, the slender, curved legs were inspired by skateboard-making techniques and attach to the curved base through an ingenious X-shaped joint. The metal bracket on the legs makes for added strength and stability.
